Sometimes the best ideas start small — and then a community comes together to help them grow.

The Madawaska Valley Harvest Garden is a wonderful example of what can happen when people, organizations, businesses, and volunteers work together toward a common goal.

The garden was created with a simple vision: to grow fresh food, create opportunities for people to participate and contribute, and bring members of our community together.

During its first season, the garden took root on property generously provided by the Barry’s Bay Legion, just below the horseshoe pits. Volunteers worked together to build raised garden beds, prepare the soil, plant, water, weed and eventually harvest a wonderful variety of fresh vegetables and herbs.

The garden quickly became home to squash, tomatoes, zucchini, beans, herbs, peppers and more.

But what grew there went far beyond vegetables.

The Harvest Garden created opportunities for people supported by MVACL to work alongside other members of the community, develop new skills, contribute to something meaningful and experience the satisfaction of watching their hard work grow.

Fresh produce from the garden was shared with the Madawaska Valley Food Bank and MVACL, allowing the work happening in the garden to reach even further into our community.

One of the most special parts of the project has been the incredible community support behind it. Local businesses, organizations, and individuals contributed materials, supplies, expertise, space, and countless volunteer hours to help turn an idea into reality.

From cedar for the raised beds and soil, compost, and mulch, to gardening tools and even a donated picnic table, each contribution helped the garden grow.

The project is also continuing to expand. With additional raised beds planned and a future garden site at the Barry’s Bay Lions Club, the Madawaska Valley Harvest Garden is only beginning to show what is possible.

The Harvest Garden is a beautiful reminder of exactly that.
